Happy New Year!
Here are Magic Negro's Top Fives in 2004:
5 DVD movies that were worth the price of admission had I saw them in the theater in 2004. [AKA My Top Movies Of The Year]
1. Collateral
Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx literally burned up the screen with their sizzling performances. Director Michael Mann is a great filmmaker.
2. Ray
I saw this at my local barbershop (on bootleg DVD) while I was getting my haircut. Jamie Foxx -- without question -- did a phenomenal job portraying the late soul crooner in this film. The direction in the movie is a little pedestrian, but it's a fine film overall. And the Best Actor Oscar goes to . . .
3. Baadasssss!
Mario Van Peebles's homage of his dad's (Melvin Van Peebles) film Sweet Sweetback's Baad Asssss Song is a cinematic history lesson.
4. Barbershop/Barbershop II: Back In Business (Box Collector's Set)
I was lucky enough to avoid the unfunny airplane comedy "Soul Plane" when it crashed and burned in theaters. But I had to see how bad this movie was on DVD. And damn, it's a horrible movie. If you want to watch a good urban comedy, I suggest picking up the "Barbershop" box set.
5. Passion of the Christ
After watching this movie on DVD, I was impressed by Mel Gibson's superb direction and actor James Caviezel's Oscar-worthy performance as Jesus Christ. I can see why this film impacted so many people -- not just Christians and religious nuts alike, but regular folk, as well. This is truly an inspirational film to watch on DVD. Props to Mel and James.
**Bonus:
Kill Bill, Vol. 2
Payback is a bitch and the Bride certainly gave her foes their comeuppendance in this sequel to "Kill Bill." I didn't enjoy "Vol. 2" as much as I did with the original, but it's a great movie nonetheless. The flick's original score and movie soundtrack are awesome. Thumbs up.

Cosign with hardCore. The Wire is the absolute best, bar none. And I'm with you on unCut. Call me demented, call me strange...but call me captivated.
Happy New Year, man.
